Our Foster Program

Canines & Kitties Rescue is an organization that puts animals first. Foster homes are in integral part to our rescue operation. The number of animals we can rescue is limited by the number of foster homes in our program. This is where you come in. The more foster homes we have, the more animals we can rescue.
By providing an animal a temporary home, the fosterer has given that animal another chance at life that he/she otherwise would not have had. The foster person’s job may not be an easy one. Dogs may need to be housebroken or have separation anxiety issues. Cats may have trust issues and need socialization. Depending on the animal and time of the year, it could take anywhere from a couple of days to many months to find a new home for your foster animal.
When you decide to foster, you commit to helping a dog/cat and preparing him/her for adoption. We take the new foster application process just as seriously as we do our adoptions. We carefully screen each applicant, using much of the same criteria used to screen potential adopters. That means we will virtually visit your home, call your vet for a reference to ensure animals are current on vetting, and get to know you and your current family so that we can match you with the best possible foster dog/cat. We will go over the responsibilities of foster parenting, review with you the case history of the dog/cat that you will be taking in and answer any questions you may have.
The more fosters we have, the more lives we can save! Note: fosters must live in Northern Virginia, DC, Maryland, and some parts of lower PA. We look forward to receiving your foster application!
PUPPY AND KITTEN FOSTERING INFO:
Puppy or Kitten Fosters typically foster litters of puppies or kittens that are not yet full vaccinated that need a little more care and attention. Puppy and Kitten Fosters are not responsible for training or housebreaking, just caring for the youngest arrivals until they are adopted. Puppy or Kitten Fosters need to have a flexible schedule and lots of patience!
