How to Adopt a Canines & Kitties Rescue Pet

Thank you for considering adoption! Our goal is to find the best match for both our animals and their future families. Please review the information below before submitting an application.

Adoption Area

We adopt to homes within approximately 9 hours of Chantilly, Virginia.

Because adopting a pet is a lifelong commitment, all adopters are required to meet the animal in person before an adoption can be finalized. We do not provide or arrange transportation.

Adoption Requirements

To adopt from Canines & Kitties Rescue, you must:

  • Be at least 25 years old.

  • Complete our online dog or cat adoption application. Applications are non-binding and simply allow us to learn more about you. Submitting an application does not obligate you to adopt.

  • Allow us to verify your veterinary history (if applicable). We check that current and previous pets have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and well cared for.

  • If you rent, we'll verify your landlord's pet policies, including any breed or size restrictions for dogs.

  • Complete a virtual home visit with all household members present. This helps ensure the pet will have a safe and appropriate home.

Meet & Greet

Once your application has been approved, we'll schedule a meet and greet with the pet.

  • Dogs: All resident dogs must attend the meet and greet.

  • Cats: Meet and greets are held either in the foster home's environment or at our partner, Mount Purrnon Cat Café & Wine Bar, depending on where the cat is currently residing.

How We Select Adopters

We review applications as they are received, but we do not operate on a first-come, first-served basis.

Our priority is finding the best home for each individual animal, resulting in successful, lifelong placements.

Because adopters must meet our pets in person, preference is generally given to applicants in the Metro Washington, DC area. However, out-of-area applicants are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Adoption Fees

Each animal's individual adoption fee is listed in its online biography.

Spay & Neuter Policy

If your puppy or kitten has not been spayed or neutered prior to adoption, you will be required to:

  • Sign a spay/neuter agreement.

  • Pay a $100 refundable spay/neuter deposit. Your deposit will be refunded after proof of surgery is received.

All puppies and kittens adopted from Canines & Kitties Rescue must be spayed or neutered by six months of age.

There are no exceptions and no extensions.

As a Virginia licensed releasing agency, we are legally required to enforce Virginia's spay/neuter law for every puppy and kitten adopted through our organization, regardless of the state in which the adoption takes place or where the adopter resides.

Right to Refuse Applications

Canines & Kitties Rescue reserves the right to refuse or discontinue any application at any time and for any reason, without providing an explanation.

We are proud to be a volunteer-run organization and are committed to maintaining a respectful environment for our team. Condescending, hostile, abusive, or otherwise inappropriate behavior toward our volunteers or staff will result in the immediate termination of the adoption process and all further communication.
